New in May 2007 are 4 ranges of wines from France. La Revolution at £3.99, Le Masquerade, Pasquiers (the grenache is good) and Dom Rimauresq. The Riojas include Monte Real, Puerta Vieja and Vega del Rayo amongst others. There are a couple of cases of Monte Real Grand Reserva 1978 which are packed in individual wooden boxes. Great presents especially if for yourself. Old favourites include Brunello di Montalcino, which I first had in an Italian restaurant in 1980; I had the waiter steam off the label so I would remember what it was. New ones that I have really enjoyed are Crowded House Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand and more recently the Wild Ferment (unoaked) Chardonnay. Also the Ninth Island range (Pinot Gris, Sauignon Blanc and Pinot Noit) from Tasmania. Elsewhere down under, Fontys Pool and The Mill from Windowrie Estate have some superb varieties and if you haven’t tried their Verdelho you really should. All this from someone who at one time spurned the New World in favour of wines from Chile. I have always liked South American wines and the Villard range from Chile is most enjoyable (I like it better than the Errazuriz range whch was a favourite long before I bought the shop and which I used to stock) and the Andes peak ranges is good value at under £5 a bottle. The Carmenere is an excellent BBQ wine and the reserve is excellent fullstop. However, the Sauvignon Blanc Reserve can compete with a the New Zealand wines which are £2 a botlle more. Dry but excellent fruit aromas. Crowded house Sauvignon Blancc, from New Zealand, is proving very popular and we have just added Catalina Sounds SB and Nanny Goat Pinot Noir; stupid name I know. New in from South Africa is Peacock Ridge which won Gold Medal in Michael Angelo 2006 awards, 4 stars in John Platter 2007 awards and Silver Medal - Best in Class - in the IWCS. Of course the wine range would not be complete without some good value Pay d’Ocs and an assortment of fine clarets. The french do know how to make good wines. Cloud Wine offer the normal range of champagnes but I would encourage customers to try the de Venoge
